Finger Math: Basic Concepts

Share:

Finger Math (also known as Chisanbop) is a Korean finger-counting technique that allows you to represent numbers from 0 to 99 using both hands. It’s a powerful tool to develop mental arithmetic skills, especially for young learners.

Basic Rules

Right hand represents units (0–9), while the left hand represents tens (10, 20, ..., 90).

  • Index finger = 1
  • Index + middle = 2
  • Index + middle + ring = 3
  • All four fingers (excluding thumb) = 4
  • Thumb = 5
  • Thumb + index = 6 (5 + 1), etc.

The left hand follows the same pattern, but multiplied by 10:

  • Index finger (left) = 10
  • Thumb (left) = 50
  • Thumb + index (left) = 60, and so on.
