Goerli is a public Ethereum test network launched in February 2019. It gives developers and users a safe place to test Ethereum applications and smart contracts without risking real Ether. It is named after the village of Goerlitz in Germany, one of the first places to adopt the Euro.
Goerli uses proof-of-authority (PoA): validators, not miners, verify transactions and maintain the network. The Goerli community selects validators; they confirm transactions and create new blocks. This makes Goerli faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient than mainnet.
Main benefit: test applications and contracts before deploying on mainnet, reducing bug risk and losses. Users can learn Ethereum and try tools without real Ether.
Goerli works with most Ethereum tools, including Remix, Truffle, and Ganache. Access it through clients such as Geth, Parity, and Nethermind, a custom RPC URL in wallets, or MetaMask.
This post shows how to add Goerli to MetaMask and receive test Ether.
First install MetaMask on your preferred browser. My guide for Google Chrome: https://vulehuan.com/en/blog/2023/5/metamask-installation-and-account-creation-on-google-chrome-en5G0K7NgOW.
MetaMask defaults to Ethereum mainnet. Click the network name at the top-right and select "Show/hide test networks".
Click "On" to display test networks in the network list.
Click the network name again and select Goerli. You are now connected to the Goerli test network.
You need test Ether from a faucet. Go to https://faucetlink.to/goerli and select an active faucet. Faucet Link lists Goerli and Sepolia faucets with regularly updated status.
Copy your Goerli account address for the next step.
Each faucet works differently. QuickNode: provide your Goerli address, share their content on Twitter, and receive test Ether (confirmation email sent on completion). pk910: click and wait to claim. Follow each faucet's instructions.
Check your test Ether balance in MetaMask on your computer or on EtherScan.
Adding Goerli to MetaMask is simple and lets you test decentralized applications and smart contracts before mainnet. Follow these steps to switch to Goerli and receive test Ether from a faucet. Then explore DApps and experiment with smart contracts.
