The former chánh tổng (district chief) once fell away and grew cold in his religious practice, but he repented and returned. During the anti-Catholic persecution under Emperor Tự Đức, he remained faithful and suffered the death sentence on January 13, 1859, and was canonized as a saint in 1988.
