Born in 1824 into a devout Catholic farming family in the village of Nam Điền, Phú Nhai parish, Saint Joseph Trần Văn Tuấn grew up during a period when the Nguyễn kings issued numerous edicts prohibiting Christianity. The struggle to make a living was already difficult, and it became even more burdened by the pressures of those harsh policies.

Born in 1775 in the village of Ninh Cường (Nam Định), the catechist Joseph Nguyễn Đình Uyển was a key assistant to Bishop Henares-Minh. Arrested during the persecution of 1838, he steadfastly refused to step over the Holy Cross to secure his release, accepting imprisonment and ultimately dying from illness and starvation, becoming a heroic witness to the faith.
