Hi everyone, it's me!
Have you ever wondered why people who are good at English have a superb ability to "guess" the meaning of new words? The secret doesn't lie in them being smarter, but in the fact that they hold the key called Etymology.
Today, we will begin Unit 1.1 in the journey [THE CONNECTED TAYLOR]. We don't do rote learning. We will "dissect" the language to see the logic behind every word. Let's look at the story of Taylor – a person struggling amidst the "connections" of their own life.
1. The Power of Bonding: The Prefix Group com- / con-
In Latin, com- or con- means "together" or "completely." When you see this prefix, immediately think of a circle where everything is gathered.
- Connect: Imagine Taylor is trying to con + nect the cables in the office. The root "nect" means to bind or join. When you "con-nect" something, you are binding them together into a unified whole.
- Contain: Taylor has a box that con + tains old memories. The root "ten" means to hold. "Con" (together) + "ten" (hold) – the act of holding everything together in one place is exactly what "containing" is.
- Complete: To com + ple a project, Taylor must fill all the gaps. The root "ple" means to fill. When something is completely filled, with nothing missing, that is when it is complete.
- Compare: Taylor sits and com + pares city life and country life. The root "par" means equal or to set alongside. You set two things side-by-side to see how they are similar or different – that is comparing.
- Compound: Taylor's lines of code are a com + pound of letters and numbers. The root "pon/pound" means to put or place. Putting many components together in one place gives you a compound.
- Consider: This is the most interesting word! con + sider. The root "sider" means stars. Ancient people used to observe the stars to make important decisions. When Taylor "considers" moving back to the countryside, he is examining everything carefully as if he were reading the stars.
2. Revival and Repetition: The Prefix Group re-
If "con-" is gathering, then re- is the compass pointing back in time or repeating an action.
- Return: Taylor wants to re + turn to his village. "Turn" is to rotate, and "re" is again. Turning back to the starting point is returning.
- Remember: When closing his eyes, Taylor re + memors the green fields. The root "memor" means mindful or to keep in mind. Bringing a memory back to the mind once more is remembering.
- Repeat: Taylor has to re + pete the software testing steps. The root "pete" means to seek or go toward. Going to the same place many times is the act of repeating.
- Result: A good system is the re + sult of perseverance. The root "sult" means to leap or spring out. What "leaps back" after a work process is the result you receive.
- Replace: Taylor decides to re + place the old code. "Place" is a location. Putting something back into a position but with a different object is replacing.
TAYLOGIC Thinking: Why understand word roots?
As you can see, when we understand that Connect is to "bind together" and Return is to "turn back," English is no longer just a collection of soulless characters. It is a picture full of logic.
Taylor is using this logic to reconnect his life. How about you? Are you ready to use TAYLOGIC to reconnect with English?
