The Exemplary Faith of Saint Dominic Đinh Đức Mậu

Saint Dominic Đinh Đức Mậu stands as a heroic witness to the Catholic faith in Vietnam. His life was a journey of total dedication to God, from his youth until he accepted capital punishment for the sake of Christ.

Vocation and Priestly Ministry

Born in 1794 in Phú Nhai village, Xuân Trường district, Nam Định province (now part of Phú Nhai parish, Bùi Chu Diocese), young Mậu early on displayed a deep love for God. With the desire to dedicate himself to serving God, he diligently studied and cultivated virtue. After training at the seminary, in the spring of 1829, he was ordained a priest alongside ten fellow classmates. Shortly thereafter, he joined and made solemn profession in the Dominican Order.

Amidst the harsh anti-Catholic edicts issued by Kings Minh Mạng, Thiệu Trị, and Tự Đức, Father Mậu remained steadfast. He braved numerous dangers to zealously preach the Gospel and care for his flock in the parishes of Trung Linh, Phú Nhai, and Kiên Lao.

Trials and Imprisonment

On August 27, 1858, Father Mậu was arrested along with several faithful believers in Kẻ Diền village, Thái Bình province, and subsequently transferred to Hưng Yên. For over two months in captivity, he endured shackles and repeated brutal tortures. However, rather than complaining, Father Mậu became a great source of encouragement for his fellow prisoners. He advised them to endure suffering patiently for the name of Jesus, helping many remain firm in their faith until their last breath.

Even in the dark prison cell, Father Mậu maintained a profound prayer life, uniting himself closely with the Passion of Christ. He was particularly diligent in praying the Rosary, viewing it as his strength to remain faithful to his priestly vocation and protect his faith against all trials.

Sacrifice for the Name of Christ

On the morning of November 5, 1858, on the banks of the Red River in Hưng Yên town, under King Tự Đức’s reign, Father Dominic Đinh Đức Mậu calmly walked to the execution ground. He accepted the sentence of beheading with peace, completing his fight of faith, as Saint Paul said: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim 4:7).

His remains were respectfully buried by the faithful at Mai Linh parish church in Nam Định province. In recognition of his merits and martyrdom, the Church beatified Father Dominic Đinh Đức Mậu on April 29, 1951, and canonized him as a Saint on June 19, 1988.
