Saint Peter Truong Van Duong was born in 1808 in Ke So, Thanh Liem district, Ha Nam province, into a poor but very virtuous family. From a young age, he aspired to live a religious life and was sent by his uncle, the priest Truong Van Thi, to the An Tap parish to be educated by Father Phuong.
The gentle and diligent Brother Duong gradually became familiar to everyone. He studied Chinese and Latin diligently. At age 26, Brother Duong became a catechist and was assigned to assist the missionary François Marette - Phan at the Bau No parish.
He taught catechism to new converts and served the parishioners of Bau No. On June 20, 1837, when the royal troops surrounded the village to arrest the missionary Cornay - Tan, Brother Duong was arrested after being pointed out as a disciple of Missionary Tan.
On June 21, 1837, along with Missionary Cornay - Tan, Brother My and Brother Truat, Brother Duong was taken to the Son Tay court. On October 19, 1837, Brother Duong was sentenced to imprisonment.
Throughout 14 months of enduring hardship from hunger, thirst, heat, cold, shackles and chains, Brother Duong remained steadfast in professing his faith. He wrote to Missionary Marette: "Thinking of the great blessings I am about to receive, the gates of heaven are near, thinking of the eternal happiness awaiting me, I no longer desire anything of this world. Father, the day is nearing when I will be judged, for the last time I bow to you, please pray for me, a sinner."
In the fall of 1838, King Minh Mang ordered a review of the sentences and ordered the execution of Brothers Nguyen Van My, Vu Van Truat and Truong Van Duong.
After receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Brother Duong was taken to the execution ground at dawn on December 18, 1838. After praying, he lay down for the soldiers to carry out the sentence, and he rested peacefully in the arms of the Lord.
Catechist Peter Truong Van Duong was beatified on May 27, 1900 and canonized on June 19, 1988.
