Saint Peter Doan Cong Quy was born in 1826 in Bung village, Binh Thanh commune, Thu Dau Mot district, Binh Duong province (nowadays). He was the youngest son in the family of Mr. Anton Mieng and Mrs. Ane Thuong. In 1847, thanks to the introduction of Father Tam, the 21-year-old Quy learned Latin under the supervision of John Mich and then entered Saint Joseph Seminary in Saigon before studying theology in Penang.

In 1855, Father Quy returned to his homeland. In September 1858, after three years of serving the faithful in various parishes, Father Quy was ordained as a priest in Thu Dau Mot. The newly ordained priest was appointed to oversee the parishes of Lai Thieu, Gia Dinh, Kien Hoa, and later served as assistant pastor in Cai Mon, Vinh Long diocese. With the enthusiasm of youth, he overcame all hardships, threats, and dangers to serve. If not for the interference of his superiors, Father Quy was ready to sacrifice his life to save the faithful of the Holy Cross.

Finally, Father Quy was appointed to Dau Nuoc parish, Cu Lao Gieng, An Giang province. When the troops of the An Giang governor surrounded the house of Mr. Le Van Phung, despite being safely hidden, Father Quy volunteered to come forward to save the homeowner. He said, "I am a pastor. Whoever wants to follow the faith, I am ready to teach."

Thus, Father Quy, along with Mr. Phung and 32 faithful, were arrested and taken to Chau Doc. The governor advised Father to renounce his faith, but he replied, "Yes, sir, I am the one who teaches this faith, how could I renounce it? Moreover, this is the true faith because it teaches only good, not the heresy as the governor misunderstands."

During the 7 months in prison, Father Quy comforted his fellow prisoners, administered the sacraments, and prayed the Rosary with them. Here, he also wrote a long poem to his mother, in which there is a passage:

"Even though the moon is shackled and the prison cup clinks,
The prison bars reveal the truth of loyalty,
Without complaint, gladly enduring one side,
To fulfill the duty of a virtuous son."

On July 30, 1859, the death sentence was sent from the capital to Chau Doc. The next day, Father Doan Cong Quy and Mr. Phung joyfully went to the execution ground in Cha Va hamlet. After three beats of the drum, the soldiers carried out the sentence, and Father Quy ascended to eternal life at the age of 33.

The martyr's remains were buried at Nang Gu church, and in 1959, they were reburied in Cu Lao Gieng.

Father Peter Doan Cong Quy was beatified on May 2, 1909, and canonized on June 19, 1988.
