Saint Andrew Nguyễn Mạnh Tường: A Flower of Faith Blooming Amidst the Fires of Trial
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:22). This Scripture verse was vividly realized in the life of Saint Andrew Nguyễn Mạnh Tường, a model layman who witnessed to Christ with his very life.
A Pious Life and Brutal Persecution
Saint Andrew Nguyễn Mạnh Tường was born in 1812 in Phú Yên parish, Ngọc Cục village, Nam Định province (now part of Ngọc Tiên parish, Bùi Chu Diocese). He married and built a disciplined, devout Catholic life, becoming a shining example within his community.
However, this peace was short-lived when the anti-Catholic edict issued by King Tự Đức in 1861 was enforced with extreme cruelty. In Nam Định, under the command of Provincial Governor Nguyễn Đình Tân (Hưng), Catholics were treated with exceptional harshness. Unlike other regions where believers were allowed to sell their assets for expenses, here, Catholics were expelled from their homes, tied in groups of five, and permitted to carry only a few handfuls of rice enough for two days. Father Estevez - Nam recorded the heartbreaking scenes of mass killings and river drownings in Nam Định and Hưng Yên during this period.
Steadfastness in Chains
Amidst this tragedy, Mr. Andrew Nguyễn Mạnh Tường was arrested along with many faithful from Ngọc Cục village and imprisoned in Nam Định. There, he endured savage tortures: wearing a heavy cangue around his neck, having his hands and feet shackled, suffering beatings, and having the words “tả đạo” (heretical religion) carved into his cheeks. Despite physical agony, his spirit remained firm, accepting all humiliation for the name of Christ.
On June 15, 1862, the mandarin presented the final test: trample on the Cross to be released and reunite with his wife and children. But Mr. Tường resolutely refused, choosing to remain loyal to God rather than save his earthly life.
To prepare their souls to receive the grace of martyrdom, he and other heroes of the faith—including his younger brother Nguyễn Mạnh Tương, as well as Nguyễn Đức Mạo, Nguyễn Huy Nguyên, and Nguyễn Đức Nhi—repented together and voluntarily fasted three days a week. Thus, they found peace and the strength to overcome all hardships.
Martyrdom and Glory
On the morning of June 16, 1862, Saint Andrew Nguyễn Mạnh Tường was beheaded at Làng Cốc execution ground, under the reign of King Tự Đức. His remains were later respectfully returned for burial within the grounds of his hometown church in Ngọc Cục.
The Church has honored his exemplary faith:
- April 29, 1951: Beatified.
- June 19, 1988: Canonized as a Saint.
